FAQ

Do I Need a Parking Permit for Carova Beach?

Yes, during peak season. From late April through early October, you need a Currituck County Beach Parking Permit to park on the beach. No permit is needed to drive on the beach—only to park.

When Are Permits Required?

Permits are required from the last Saturday of April through the first Saturday of October. Outside this window, you can park on the beach without a permit.

Permit Types and Costs

Permit Type Duration Cost
Weekly Permit 10 days $50
Seasonal Permit Full season $150 (visitors)
Seasonal Permit Full season Free (residents/property owners)

How to Get a Permit

Permits are available through Currituck County. You can purchase them:

  • Online: Through the Currituck County website (permits available starting April 1)
  • In person: At designated county locations

Limited Availability

Weekly permits are limited to 300 per week. During peak summer weeks, they can sell out. Book early if you're planning a July or August visit. Seasonal permits don't have this limitation.

Driving vs. Parking

This is an important distinction:

  • Driving on the beach: No permit required, ever
  • Parking on the beach: Permit required May–October

If you're just driving through to see the horses and don't plan to stop and park on the beach, you don't need a permit. But if you want to park, set up chairs, and spend time on the beach, you'll need one during peak season.

Where to Display Your Permit

Permits must be clearly displayed on your vehicle's dashboard or rearview mirror. County enforcement officers patrol the beach and will cite vehicles without valid permits.

Staying at a Rental?

If you're staying at a vacation rental in Carova, you can park at your rental property without a beach parking permit. The permit is only required for parking on the beach itself, not on private property.
