FAQ

Do You Need a Permit to Drive on Carova Beach?

No. You do not need a permit to drive on the beach in the Corolla/Carova 4x4 area. This is one of the few beach driving areas on the East Coast that remains permit-free.

Why No Permit?

The 4x4 beaches north of Corolla are not part of the National Park system. They're a mix of private property, state-owned land, and the Currituck National Wildlife Refuge. Beach driving access is maintained as a practical necessity—it's the only way to reach the homes and communities in Carova.

What About Other OBX Beaches?

Other beach driving areas in the Outer Banks do require permits:

  • Cape Hatteras National Seashore: Free permit required (available at visitor centers or online)
  • Ocracoke Island: Free permit required (same as Hatteras)

But for Corolla and Carova? Just show up with a 4x4 and you're good to go.

Rules You Still Need to Follow

Just because there's no permit doesn't mean there are no rules. Here's what's required:

  • 4WD vehicle: Required for sand driving
  • Air down tires: To 16-18 PSI for safe beach driving
  • 25 mph speed limit: Enforced on the beach
  • 50-foot rule: Stay at least 50 feet from wild horses (it's the law)
  • No driving on dunes: Stay on the beach proper

Could This Change?

Regulations can always change. While no permit has been required historically, it's wise to check with Currituck County before your trip if you want to be certain. That said, as of now, the 4x4 beaches remain permit-free.
