What If I Get Stuck on the Beach?
Don't panic—it happens to everyone eventually. First, stop digging yourself deeper. Then try airing down more, digging out, and gently rocking free. If that doesn't work, flag down a passing vehicle or call a tow service.
Step 1: Stop Immediately
The moment you feel your tires spinning without moving forward, stop. Spinning your tires just digs you deeper into the sand. The hole you create makes recovery harder.
Step 2: Assess the Situation
- Check your tire pressure: Are you aired down enough? Many stuck situations happen because tires are still at road pressure.
- Look at where you're stuck: Soft sand above the high tide line? Wet area near the water?
- Check the tide: Is water coming in? If so, you need to act fast.
Step 3: Try Self-Recovery
Air Down More
If you're at 18 PSI, try going to 15 or even 12. Lower pressure = bigger tire footprint = better flotation. This alone often gets you out.
Dig Out
Clear sand from in front of all four tires, creating a gradual ramp. If you have a shovel, great. If not, use your hands, a frisbee, a floor mat—whatever works.
Use Traction Aids
Place floor mats, boards, or recovery tracks under your tires for traction. Even cardboard or towels can help in a pinch.
Rock Gently
Shift between drive and reverse, building momentum to rock out of the hole. Apply gas gently— spinning tires at high RPM just makes things worse.
The Golden Rule
If your tires are spinning, you're making it worse. Ease off the gas, reassess, and try something different. Patience beats horsepower in sand.
Step 4: Get Help
Flag Down a Passing Vehicle
Beach driving builds community. Most drivers will stop to help, especially if they have a tow strap. A quick pull is usually all it takes. Always offer to return the favor.
Call a Tow Service
If self-recovery fails and no help is around, call a professional. These services specialize in beach recovery:
Prior's 4 Wheel Drive Service
The go-to for 4x4 beach recovery in Corolla/Carova
(252) 453-6192
Salty Paws Towing
Beach recovery and towing services
(252) 722-2744
Corolla Towing
24/7 towing and recovery
(252) 453-2635
Save these numbers in your phone before you head to the beach. Cell service can be spotty in Carova, so having numbers ready helps.
Step 5: Watch the Tide
If you're stuck and the tide is coming in, time is critical. Salt water will destroy your vehicle quickly. If you can't get out and water is approaching, call for professional help immediately.
Prevention Is Better Than Recovery
- Air down properly: 16-18 PSI for most vehicles, lower if needed
- Stay on firm sand: Wet sand near the waterline is usually best
- Avoid soft spots: Dry, fluffy sand above high tide is trouble
- Keep momentum: Don't stop in soft areas—keep moving
- Know the tides: Check tide charts before heading out
